Year 9                 Narrative Writing

A narrative is a piece of writing which tells a story, like the short stories you have read recently.  Your task is to write your own narrative story. It is to have the following features:

  • A beginning, middle and an end
  • 2-3 characters only
  • 1-2 settings only, 1 is better in a short piece of writing
  • a climax
  • a message/theme
  • twist/surprise at the end (keep the reader thinking and don’t tell them everything, let the reader try and work it out)
  • descriptive language
  • a New Zealand flavour (without telling the reader that it is set in New Zealand, the reader is able to ascertain that the story is taking place in New Zealand maybe some kiwi colloquialisms or place names)

Your story should be 5-6 paragraphs, about 1 and a 1/2  to 2 pages long.

You may choose from the following starters or choose your own idea.

At the beach……

I felt a real sense of achievement….

Tramping through the thick bush…..

We all had our reasons to be on the farm…..

Instead of doing what I usually do at the bach….

Finally we arrived……
